   OBJECTIVES: Shiftwork is now a major feature of working life across a broad range of industries. The features of the shift systems operated can impact on the wellbeing, performance, and sleep of shiftworkers. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge on one major characteristic of shift rotas-namely, shift duration. Evidence comparing the relative effects of eight hour and 12 hour shifts on fatigue and job performance, safety, sleep, and physical and psychological health are considered. 2. Smart Working: Work Flexibility Without Constraints

   Does removing constraints on the time and place of work benefit the utility of workers and firms? We design a randomized experiment of a sample of workers in a large Italian company; workers are randomly divided into a treated group that engages in flexible place and time of work (which we call “smart working”) one day per week for nine months and a control group that continues to work traditionally. By comparing the treated and control groups, we find causal evidence that the flexibility of smart working increases the productivity of workers.     Time spent on the job is a fundamental aspect of working conditions that influences many facets of individuals’ lives. We study how an organisation-wide four-day workweek intervention—with no reduction in pay—affects workers’ well-being. Participating organisations undergo pre-trial work reorganisation to improve efficiency and collaboration, followed by a 6-month four-day workweek trial.
