  1. The Labor Market Integration of Refugee Migrants in High-Income Countries

Courtney G Brell, Christian Dustmann, Ian P. Preston · 2020 · The Journal of Economic Perspectives · 442 citations

We provide an overview of the integration of refugees into the labor markets of a number of high-income countries. Discussing the ways in which refugees and economic migrants are differently selected and so might be expected to perform differently in a host country’s labor market, we examine employment and wages for these groups over time after arrival. There is significant heterogeneity between host countries, but in general, refugees experience persistently worse outcomes than other migrants. While the gaps between the groups can be seen to decrease on a timescale of a decade or two, this is more pronounced in employment rates than it is in wages. We also discuss how refugees are distinct

  2. Refugee-Integration-Opportunity Structures: Shifting the Focus From Refugees to Context

    Jenny Phillimore · 2020 · Journal of Refugee Studies · 251 citations

Abstract Whilst it is increasingly acknowledged that integration is ‘a dynamic, two-way process of mutual accommodation by all immigrants and residents’, the focus in integration theory, policy and practice has been placed upon refugees or migrants themselves. The role of receiving societies in supporting and providing the context for integration has not been systematically interrogated. This article is original in its focus upon the role of receiving societies in shaping refugee-integration outcomes. It attends to multiple interconnecting receiving-society-opportunity structures shifting thinking about refugee integration by asking how refugee-receiving countries influence refugee integrati

  3. Migrant and refugee populations: a public health and policy perspective on a continuing global crisis

Mohamed Abbas, Tammam Aloudat, Javier Bartolomei, et al. · 2018 · Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control · 183 citations

The 2015-2017 global migratory crisis saw unprecedented numbers of people on the move and tremendous diversity in terms of age, gender and medical requirements. This article focuses on key emerging public health issues around migrant populations and their interactions with host populations. Basic needs and rights of migrants and refugees are not always respected in regard to article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and article 23 of the Refugee Convention. These are populations with varying degrees of vulnerability and needs in terms of protection, security, rights, and access to healthcare. Their health status, initially conditioned by the situation at the point of origin, is

  4. (The Struggle for) Refugee integration into the labour market: evidence from Europe

Francesco Fasani, Tommaso Frattini, Luigi Minale · 2021 · Journal of Economic Geography · 163 citations

Abstract We study the labour market performance of refugees vis-à-vis comparable migrants across 20 European countries and over time. In the first part of our analysis, we document that labour market outcomes for refugees are consistently worse than those for other migrants. Refugees are 11.6% less likely to have a job and 22% more likely to be unemployed than other migrants with similar characteristics. Their income, occupational quality and labour market participation are also relatively weaker. These gaps are larger relative to economic than non-economic migrants, and persist until about 10–15 years after immigration. In the second part of our analysis, we investigate the role of economic

  5. Gender and Refugee Integration: a Quantitative Analysis of Integration and Social Policy Outcomes

Sin Yi Cheung, Jenny Phillimore · 2016 · Journal of Social Policy · 161 citations

Abstract The population of refugees in the UK is expanding and will expand further given the UK Government's response to the European refugee crisis. This paper breaks new ground by undertaking a gender analysis of integration outcomes across a range of areas, namely social networks, language proficiency, health, education, employment and housing, that are highly relevant for social policy. Using the UK's only longitudinal survey on refugees, we conduct secondary data analysis to examine the factors associated with integration outcomes. We find significant gender differences in language, self-reported health, ability to budget for household expenses and access to formal social networks and q

  6. ‘Active integration’: sport clubs taking an active role in the integration of refugees

    M. Doidge, M. Keech, E. Sandri · 2020 · International Journal of Sport Policy and Politics · 67 citations

ABSTRACT In the context of the global migrant and refugee crisis there is considerable enthusiasm for the notion that participation by migrants of refugee background in community sport can play a role in fostering a sense of community belonging. Sport potentially is an opportunity for refugees to integrate (with each other and host communities). Community sports organisations in the UK - and specifically sports clubs - continually face challenges to devote resources to social policy outcomes beyond increasing sport participation. This article argues that the active approach of coaches, volunteers and managers to consciously manage inclusive sport activities is central for the integration of

  7. Integrating refugees into labor markets

    Pieter Bevelander · 2016 · IZA World of Labor · 65 citations

ProsRefugees start at a lower employment level upon arrival in host countries but subsequently "catch up," economically, with family reunion migrants.Internal migration (i.e.within the host country) of immigrants in general, and of refugees in particular, is an important factor for obtaining employment.Similar labor market results (e.g.employment and income levels) are obtained for male and female immigrants in a number of different countries. Results from current research seem robust, since comparable outcomes are obtained when investigating various national labor markets. elevatOr PitCHFor the first time since the Second World War, the total number of refugees amounts to more than 50 millio

  8. A Scoping Review of Aging Experiences Among Culturally and Linguistically Diverse People in Australia: Toward Better Aging Policy and Cultural Well-Being for Migrant and Refugee Adults

Nichole Georgeou, Spyros Schismenos, Nidhi Wali, et al. · 2021 · The Gerontologist · 63 citations

Abstract Background and Objectives Australia’s population is growing, aging, and becoming more ethnically diverse, resulting in barriers and challenges around social inclusion for non-English-speaking migrants and refugees. This scoping review investigates the experiences of aging within Australia among older adults from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) migrant and refugee backgrounds to identify barriers to social integration. Research Design and Methods A scoping review of English language literature and gray literature on the experiences of aging among CALD migrants and refugees living in Australia was conducted from January 2000 to January 2021, according to Arksey and O’Mall

  9. Integration of migrant and refugee data in health information systems in Europe: advancing evidence, policy and practice

    K. Bozorgmehr, Martin McKee, Natasha Azzopardi-Muscat, et al. · 2023 · The Lancet Regional Health - Europe · 46 citations

Summary Coverage of migrant and refugee data is incomplete and of insufficient quality in European health information systems. This is not because we lack the knowledge or technology. Rather, it is due to various political factors at local, national and European levels, which hinder the implementation of existing knowledge and guidelines. This reflects the low political priority given to the topic, and also complex governance challenges associated with migration and displacement. We review recent evidence, guidelines, and policies to propose four approaches that will advance science, policy, and practice. First, we call for strategies that ensure that data is collected, analyzed and dissemin

Blessing Kanengoni, Katie Watson, Carolina Galindo, et al. · 2023 · Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health · 45 citations

The health system in Aotearoa New Zealand is predicated on equity in access to health services as a fundamental objective yet barriers to equitable access for migrant and refugees continue to exist. There is a paucity of studies that synthesise the experiences and realities of migrants, refugees and healthcare providers that hinder access to healthcare and provide recommendations to improve services. This review synthesised these barriers and recommendations, with an aim to improve equitable access to healthcare to migrants and refugees. 11. Housing inequalities and health outcomes among migrant and refugee populations in high-income countries: a mixed-methods systematic review

Kritika Rana, J. Kent, Andrew Page · 2025 · BMC Public Health · 43 citations

Migrant and refugee populations are disproportionately affected by the housing crises reportedly impacting high-income countries around the globe. However, the health implications of housing inequalities within these communities and contexts remain relatively understudied. This review aimed to synthesise the evidence on housing and health inequalities prevalent among migrant and refugee populations in high-income countries, and to identify the pathways linking housing inequalities and health outcomes. This systematic review employed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for mixed-methods systematic reviews using a convergent integrated approach to synthesis and integration. Electroni

Shirley Martin, Deirdre Horgan, J. O’Riordan, et al. · 2023 · International Journal of Inclusive Education · 43 citations

ABSTRACT Schools are chief among the social institutions impacted by migrant flows as key sites of integration and support for migrant children. This article focuses on micro-and meso-level interactions and their importance to experiences of belonging and socio-educational integration for migrant children. It explores outcomes from qualitative research in Ireland conducted as part of a European research project investigating the socio-educational integration of refugee and migrant children in schools. The research uses participatory and co-creation methodologies, including a Children and Young People’s Research Advisory Group. Child-friendly and age-appropriate focus groups were conducted wi

  13. Triple Disadvantage?

    T. Liebig, K. Tronstad · 2018 · OECD Social, Employment and Migration Working Papers · 31 citations

45% of refugees in Europe are women, yet little is known on their integration outcomes and the specific challenges they face. This report summarises prior research on the integration of refugee women, both compared with refugee men and other immigrant women. It also provides new comparative evidence from selected European and non-European OECD countries. Refugee women face a number of particular integration challenges associated with poorer health and lower education and labour market outcomes compared to refugee men, who are already disadvantaged in comparison with other migrant groups. They also show a peak in fertility in the year after arrival. A large fraction has come from countries wh

  14. The arrival of Ukrainian refugees as an opportunity to advance migrant integration policy

    Marie Jelínková, M. Plaček, František Ochrana · 2023 · Policy Studies · 19 citations

ABSTRACT The Czech Republic has received the largest number of Ukrainian refugees per capita. An underdeveloped migrant integration policy and limited experience with large numbers of refugees hampered the Czechs’ willingness to help. The reception phase relied heavily on crisis teams, volunteers, and civil society organizations. Accommodating structural measures became necessary. This article takes a closer look at these changes and explains how the large number of Ukrainian refugees constitutes an “external shock” that has shaped Czech migrant integration policy in several key aspects. We also examine the role of international organizations in shaping migrant integration policy. We use the

  16. From Mere Life to a Good Life: Shifting Refugee Integration Policy from Outcomes to Capabilities

    Jenny Phillimore · 2024 · Refugee Survey Quarterly · 14 citations

Despite extensive criticism, integration policy has seen increasing resonance in many Western countries. Refugees are particularly susceptible to the effects of integration policy as, unlike other migrants, they do not have the option to return. Further, the nature of integration experiences has been shown to impact health and well-being, with positive experiences capable of moderating prior trauma. The primary focus of integration policy has been on self-sufficiency, with little attention paid to the ways in which refugees could be supported to live a good life. This article outlines a new framework, consisting of nine integration capabilities, which expand the focus on integration policy

  17. Settlement Intentions of Ukrainian Pre-War and Forced Migrants in Poland: Challenges for Migrant Integration Policy at the Local Level

Marcin Gońda · 2024 · Journal of International Migration and Integration · 12 citations

The paper examines the relationship between the settlement intentions of Ukrainian immigrants and structural integration measures implemented at the local level in Poland. For this purpose, the example of Lodz, a large city in central Poland where large immigration has recently taken place, is analysed. The study was based on a survey of the settlement plans of two Ukrainian immigrant groups: those who moved to Lodz for work or educational purposes (pre-war migrants) and those who found refuge there after Russia’s attack on Ukraine in 2022 (forced migrants). It showed that many Ukrainians were undecided about settling in Lodz, although the pre-war migrants were more willing to stay there tha

Kritika Rana, Andrew Page, J. Kent, et al. · 2022 · International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health · 12 citations

Several high-income countries are currently experiencing an unprecedented and multifaceted housing crisis. The crisis is escalating rapidly, and its negative ramifications are shared disproportionately by migrant and refugee communities. Although housing is often cited as an important social determinant of health, the relationship between housing inequalities and health outcomes in the context of migrant and refugee populations remain under-explored, particularly in high-income countries. This paper presents a protocol for a mixed-methods systematic review which will synthesize the evidence on the key housing and health inequalities faced by migrant and refugee populations in high-income cou

  19. Forced Migration and the Politics of Belonging: Integration Policy, National Debates and Migrant Strategies

    S. Rottmann · 2023 · International Migration Review · 8 citations

This research note examines the politics of refugee belonging in Germany, Sweden, Austria, United Kingdom, Italy, Greece, and Turkey. Specifically, it explores how migrant belonging is impacted by integration policies and national political debates on immigration in these countries. Prior research suggests that refugees have little knowledge of policy, but that national political or media debates strongly impact a feeling of inclusion. Our research shows that both policy and national/media debates affect belonging. Despite widely differing legal and national contexts, the countries studied largely base integration on principles of cultural assimilation that can be hostile to “outsiders” and
